From Vattakanal I took a taxi south toward Munnar. Munnar is located on a mountain at an altitude of 1,600 meters in Kerala state in South India. A six hours drive that I shared with 3 good friends, that definitely the most beautiful drive that I have ever experienced. The contently changing view became more beautiful as each half-hour passed.
Munnar looks like a set from some fairytale, but ‘Backpackers Street’ looks like behind the scenes.
The whole area is full of mesmerizing tea fields, but the hostel area is two streets of old buildings that don’t show even ten percent of the place’s beauty. We had come to travel, so I had already seen some of the beauty of the area. But I still felt that it would be a waste to spend my days in Munnar on that street. So I tried my luck and I went into the tea field, hoping that there would be an available room at Zina’s Cottage.
Getting up in the morning and being in the middle of a tea plantation was a particularly good experience, I am happy I chose to sleep there and I recommend that you spend your night in Munnar there too. From Backpackers street it is a 5 min drive in a rickshaw or 15 min walk.
The days in Munnar included many walks among the tea plantations at several different sites. The place is abundant with lakes and waterfalls, but a walk from wherever you are, will be a good experience and you will get to see amazing views.
In fact, the most significant day in Munnar for me was on a trip I did alone from my hostel.
After more than a month in India, I truly felt the freedom that I had as a solo traveler. I started my day with mediation, then I booked an overnight bus alone to my next distention. After I understanding that my friends were going to spend their day in their own hostel, I went back to my room and went wandering in a tea field that surrounds the area.
I was sitting in the middle of a huge tea field alone when suddenly an older Indian guy with a machete started approaching my area. I saw clearly how I had the freedom to choose my own thoughts. I could easily have been sucked into a stream of limiting, frightening thoughts but I knew that once that happened I would adjust myself to a frequency where everything that I afraid of could happen.
Once I am on high frequency I can only interact with people who match my high-frequency range. This was reflected throughout the day, because I did many things alone. I could notice the difference in my interaction with other people and I could see the change in the way people communicated with me and the situations that opened up for me.
Munnar is a stunning place and I feel that I have not exhausted everything it has to offer. So if you’ve already reached the south, the views on the drive to Munnar are, without a doubt, well worth the journey. Take a break and jump into a magical fairytale.
